Memorial Day weekend in Washington DC

(sara & chrisch) While planning our trip to the US we didn’t think of Memorial Day, but by chance we were here in DC at the right time - we had an awesome weekend. On Saturday evening we strolled through the Mall for some site seeing and night pictures of the monuments.

After our visit of the Capitol Hill Baptist church on Sunday morning we enjoyed the rolling thunder motorcycle parade. It would have been fun to participate.

The next event was the Memorial Day concert at Capitol Hill, where we were among the thousands of visitors of course. Half way through the concert there was a security announcement that all the visitors are requested to leave in an orderly manner and to seek shelter due to an approaching major storm. Indeed the sky was very dark. The evacuation was quite an adventure, but everything went smoothly. The rain started when we arrived at the bus station and there were some thunders. However the storm was in our opinion still minor.

On Memorial Day we visited the Arlington cemetery and heard the speech of President Obama at the Arena /Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Unfortunately we couldn’t see him. However we don’t complain since we didn’t even expect to meet him until we learnt about this event at the gate to the cemetery.

Afterwards we walked over the bridge and along the shore of the Pontiac to the Jefferson memorial. From there we continued our walk to the Mall, where we arrived at the just on time to watch the military and school parade. It was very hot so that we escaped after a while into some of the museums to enjoy the air conditioner and of course the excellent exhibitions – amazing that all the Smithsonian museums are for free. We had a lot of fun and moreover all these events helped us to understand and appreciate the American patriotism a bit more.

Georgetown
Georgetown is a nice village of Washington, famous for its university and numerous pubs and restoaurants. We were blessed and could stay at Barbeys house - another contact from Cameroon. However we had one more thing in common.  They are as well Swiss, but living in the States since about 30 years. It was very interesting to talk with them about the two cultures and politics.
Sara had the possibility to accompany Charlotte one morning to the Georgetown Pediatric Hopspital and to experience ward rounds there.

(sara & chrisch) Coatesville, a town in Pennsylvania is, unlike our other destinations, not a famous touristic spot. So you might wonder what brought us to this place. The answer is that Conrods, our missionary friends from Cameroon (see Blog Baka), are for the next six months on furlough and are staying at Laurels parent’s place.

Since Coatesville is located in between New York and Washington DC, we decided to take an Amtrak train and stop there for a visit.

It was great fun to meet the Conrod family again and enjoy the hospitability of Laurel’s parents. Her Mother prepared Corn, sweet potatoes am ham loaf, a Dutch meal, which is traditional in this region. It was really delicious.

By the way, Conrods took us on a sightseeing tour to Intercourse, an Amish village with a visitor center. It was interesting to see them in their old fashioned clothes driving along the roads in buggies. We were quite impressed by their handicraft, especially the beautiful quilts.

The next day Conrods gave us a lift to DC. But before they dropped us at our Youth Hostel we spend the day together visiting the Air and Space Museum in Dulles. It was fascinating to see the Discovery Space shuttle, a lot of historic and newer planes and do a flight simulation.

New York

(sara & chrisch) As promised we continue with our blog from now on in English during the next eight weeks and we’ll inform you about the highlights of our trip to the USA.

Last Saturday we arrived in New York JFK, where Susanne, a grand cousin of Christoph, picked us up from the airport. We could stay at her house in Brewster about one hour north of Manhattan. The house is surrounded by trees and in the morning we could hear birds and watch squirrels from the dining room – such a contrast to the busy city.
One night we stayed in Harlem and visited Jennifer Hao and her family and got a feeling of living in the middle of the city.

Our visits to the city focused of course mainly on the tourist highlights, such as Wall Street, Greenwich Village, Time Square, Central Park and so on. Unfortunately, it started raining on Monday and never really stopped till we left NY. Therefore we decided to skip a visit to the Empire State Building or Top of the Rock. That was a disappointment but 50$ are too much to see just clouds and fog.

The highlights of our visit in NY were the trip on the Staten Island Ferry on Sunday with awesome view to the sky line and statue of liberty (Dave, thank you for this tip) and the walk through the whole Central Park. Even outside of the park we walked about 50 blocks a day, a healthy and interesting way to explore the city by the way…

On Wednesday we went with Susanne further northwest and walked over “The Walkway over the Hudson”, a former railroad bridge now turned into a state park. Afterwards we went to Woodstock and had a look at the remaining hippie community and some of the tourist shops.

Now our time in NY has already come to an end. Currently we are sitting in a train with Wi-Fi access to Coatesville – able to communicate with friends and family – this way travelling is fun.

Abschied von Mbingo

(sara & chrisch) Vor fünf Wochen wurden wir in Kamerun von unseren Freunden verabschiedet und traten die Rückreise in die Schweiz an. Der Abschied von Kamerun viel uns nicht leicht, da wir sehr gute Beziehungen zu den Einheimischen und den anderen Missionaren aufgebaut hatten.

Hier -mit einiger Verspätung- noch ein kurzer Rückblick über die Abschiedsanlässe:
An Ostern, dem letzten Sonntag vor unserer Abreise, organisierten wir bei uns Zuhause eine Abschiedsfeier für all unsere Freunde. Initial rechneten wir mit etwa siebzig Gästen, so planten wir ein einfaches Menu mit Reis und zwei verschiedenen Fleisch-Saucen. Trotzdem waren wir sehr dankbar über das Angebot unserer Haushälterin Anna uns bei der Vorbereitung der Erdnusssuppe und der Tomatensauce zu unterstützen. Annas Einsatz am Sonntagmorgen ermöglichte uns ein letztes Mal den Gottesdienst der Funge Kirche zu besuchen, wo wir von der Gemeinde herzlich verabschiedet wurden.

Um den Andrang in unserem Haus zu minimieren, luden wir die Gäste ab 12:00 zu einem „Tag der offenen Tür“ ein. Da wir aus eigener Erfahrung wussten, dass Feste üblicherweise erst mit einer Verspätung von ein bis zwei Stunden starteten, gingen wir davon aus, dass die ersten Gäste vermutlich erst um etwa ein Uhr eintreffen werden.
Zu unserer Überraschung stand aber bereits um 11 Uhr Ougouda mit seiner Familie vor der Tür und ab 12 Uhr setzte der Besucherstrom richtig ein. Die Gäste gingen davon aus, dass bei Europäern das Fest pünktlich beginnt und somit hielten sie sich alle an die vorgegebene Zeit. Soviel zu Erwartungen an andere Kulturen…

Glücklicherweise hatten wir sehr schönes Wetter und so konnten wir Tische und Stühle vor dem Haus aufstellen und so zumindest unseren Gästen genügend Sitzgelegenheiten bieten.
Das unerwartet frühe Eintreffen und die Anzahl der Gäste, es kamen über 120!, bereiteten uns logistische Herausforderungen. Unsere Mütter vor Ort halfen spontan in der Küche mit und unterstützten uns und die beiden angestellten Mädchen beim Servieren.
Die Gäste mussten zum Teil ein wenig länger auf das Essen warten, was aber niemand störte.
Aus unserer Sicht war der Anlass ein voller Erfolg!

Abschiedsfeier bei uns vor dem Haus (aus Cameroon: Abschied)

Am Freitag, dem Tag unserer Abreise aus Mbingo, veranstaltete die Spitaladministration auch eine kleine Abschiedsfeier für uns. Anstelle der regulären Kaffeepause fand eine Verabschiedung mit anschliessenden Essen statt.
Verschiedene Angestellte des Spitals hielten kurze Reden. Es war schön zu hören wie wir von den Einheimischen geschätzt und wahrgenommen wurden, und was für sie wichtig war. Zum Beispiel unsere Spaziergänge durch Mbingo 2 mit spontanen Besuchen. Als wir die Gelegenheit hatten ein paar Worte an die Kollegen zu richten, flossen einigen Tränen. Es war sehr emotional, da der Abschied nun kurz bevorstand.

Auf unserer Rückreise hielten wir für eine Nacht in Bamenda, um ein weiteres Mal einen Abend mit der Familie Hohn zu verbringen. Am Samstag ging es dann weiter nach Douala wo wir eine Nacht verbrachten. Wir hatten die Rückreise so organisiert, um genügen Zeit zum Verarbeiten der letzten zwei Jahre zu haben.

Nach unserer Rückkehr in die Schweiz standen die Stellensuche für Chrisch und Wohnungssuche auf dem Programm. Glücklicherweise konnten beide Aufgaben innerhalb von zwei Wochen erledigt werden. Wir werden ab dem 23. Juli an der Bondelistrasse 34, in Wabern wohnen und Chrisch tritt seine neue Stelle beim Kanton am 1. August an.
Sara wird am 1. September ihre seit längerem zugesagte Stelle am Tropeninstitut in Basel antreten.

Bis es soweit ist, geniessen wir zwei Monate in den USA. Wir besuchen auf dieser Reise verschiedene Freunde die wir während unseres Aufenthaltes in Afrika kennenlernten.
